Hydroxypropyl starch ether imparts unique properties to cement and gypsum-based products. It has a chemical structure similar to hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, not only serving functions akin to HPMC but also exhibiting excellent compatibility with other construction additives. When used in combination with hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), hydroxypropyl starch ether achieves superior thickening effects, improved crack resistance, enhanced workability, and cost reduction in mortar formulations.

Application
Applications of hydroxypropyl starch ether in dry mortar:
- Tile Adhesives: HPS is often used in tile adhesives to improve their workability, adhesion, and water retention. HPS provide a consistent and strong bond between tiles and the substrate.
- Cement-Based Mortars: HPS acts as a thickener and stabilizer in cement-based mortars, enhancing their consistency and workabilityand also improves adhesion and reduces the risk of cracking.
- Renders and Plasters: In renders and plasters, hydroxypropyl starch ether improves the mix’s water retention, workability, and adhesion to various surfaces.
- Self-Leveling Compounds: HPS is used in self-leveling compounds to achieve a smooth and even surface, whichhelps the mixture flow more easily and levels, making it ideal for flooring applications.
- Gypsum-Based Products: HPS is added to gypsum-based products, such as gypsum plasters, joint compounds, and gypsum boards, to enhance workability and water retention.
- Exterior Insulation and Finishing Systems (EIFS): In EIFS, HPS improves the adhesion of the base coat to the insulation board and substrate. Hydroxypropyl starch ether also enhances the flexibility and impact resistance of the finishing coat.
- Cementitious Grouts: HPS is used in cementitious grouts to improve flowability, workability, and water retention properties. Hydroxypropyl starch ether can achieve a strong and durable bond between tiles or masonry units.
- Construction Adhesives: HPS is employed in various construction adhesives to enhance their bonding strength and improve workability.
